Cedar Street
A common post war 1940's suburban single tract home gets an expanding family makeover by doubling its size and adding a second story in Santa Monica. The design strategy included saving the existing chimney, underpinning the first floor foundation stem wall, overhanging the South and North ends of the second floor, stacking the bathroom core and flooding the second floor with daylight through skylight shafts. Modest materials include cement plaster, aluminum dual glazed windows, green three tab roof shingles and exposed bookmatched plywood and Douglas fir timber. Rain water is recycled on site to an underground cistern in the front yard.
Circa 1995
