Crawford Residence
Awarded to Morphosis in 1988 after fierce local competition this 6,300 square foot retirement residence was commissioned in a new development in Montecito for a couple! It was to include her art studio, an open kitchen and living room for free flowing entertainment, her spice garden, a Winter bedroom and a Summer bedroom, a lap pool, and a freestanding guest house that would accommodate his boat. We carved an enscribed domus to include an entry with a surprise focal point triangular space that is open to the sky similar to the south point of the Ile d'Cite in Paris. Views include the Santa Inez mountains to the South East and the open blue Pacific to the West. I worked on this as the Project Architect in the Design Development phase and presented it twice to the local Design Review Board when David Gebhard was alive. And I had the pleasure of working closely with both Mr. and Mrs. Crawford and Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi who assisted me in beginning my own firm during this seminal project.
